About the event

Program Notes:

String Quartet No. 2, "Recent Emotions" by Sean Vigneau-Britt

I always use music to express my emotions, but I usually let the audience interpret what those emotions are. With this composition, I assigned each of the four movements a different emotion that I have experienced recently and wrote the music to express that one specific sentiment. The movements are, respectively, I. Anger, II. Despair, III. Fear, and IV. Hope.

String Quartet No. 1, “The Third Reality” by Hannah Selin

This piece is dedicated to my father, and it maps his miraculous recovery from a near-fatal work accident in 2018. “The Third Reality” is a term he invented to describe the liminal world he emerged into after four days of unconsciousness, a series of very real (yet imagined) places he inhabited over the course of a week in which memories, dreams, and his immediate surroundings blurred together.

"Botanical Portraits" by Abby Swidler

"Botanical Portraits" is a series of miniatures for string quartet exploring plant-life. Each movement is a portrait informed by the texture, shape, color, smell, and environment of a particular plant.  I hope these pieces will inspire the performer and listener to observe the fluidity and multiplicity of expressions of plant-life, and in turn feel affirmed in their own uniqueness.
